WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Nigeria’s Senate wants to make foreign aid criminal. Here’s how:
  • 1. The law plans to determine what NGOs can do under the guise of “national interest”. If they don’t approve a charitable project, then you can’t do it.
  • 2. The law plans to force NGOs to disclose everyone that gives them money every 30 days. This means handing out the personal information of givers to the government.
  • 3. The law wants to create another new government agency that licenses NGOs every 2 years. This is yet another addition to a bloated bureaucracy and puts anti-corruption and transparency groups at risk.
The NGO bill is all about control.

Nigeria already has agencies that prevent “money laundering” [the EFCC and the NFIU] and several intelligence agencies to counter terrorist financing.
